HSK reform: is my HSK 2 still worth anything?
The HSK has gone from 6 to 9 levels: an old HSK 2 now roughly matches the new HSK 1. What changed, and the lesson for every certification and career change.
Note. No affiliate links here. I mention Pandarine, my own product, because building it is how I found out about this reform. More practical resources are in my Tech section.
The certificate I was so proud of
In March 2024, I passed my HSK 2. I was proud of it.
Two years later, while building Pandarine, I found out the HSK had changed its rules. And that my HSK 2 now matches… roughly the new HSK 1.
What changed
The HSK goes from 6 to 9 levels, grouped into three bands:
- elementary: levels 1 to 3;
- intermediate: levels 4 to 6;
- advanced: levels 7 to 9.
Total vocabulary jumps from about 5,000 to 11,000 words. And the speaking test becomes mandatory from level 3.
The mapping that stings
There is no official conversion table. So I compared the vocabulary required at each level:
Estimated mapping based on vocabulary: there is no official table.
And the old HSK 1 (150 words) doesn't even reach the new HSK 1 (300 words).
The good news: old certificates remain valid. But every employer or school decides what it accepts.
It made me reread China's points-based work visa system with fresh eyes: it awards points from HSK 4 upwards (I break it down in Working in tech in China after 40). So when a job ad or an application asks for "HSK 4" today, the first question is: which one?
The lesson for your career change
Tech works the same way. Certifications get new versions, exam objectives shift, stacks age.
A qualification is a snapshot taken on a given date, not something you own for life. Three habits I've picked up since:
1. Write down the version of every certification
On your résumé and LinkedIn: "HSK 2 (old scale, 2024)", "AWS Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02)". One extra line, and nobody can misread your level.
2. Check the official exam guide before you start studying
Not the blog post that summarized it two years ago (yes, I see the irony). The awarding body's website, the current version, the exam date.
3. Talk skills, not just paper
"300 words mastered, simple conversation" says more than a level whose meaning has shifted. That's true for Chinese and for code alike: what you can actually do ages far more slowly than the name on the certificate.
If you're wondering whether a career change is still worth it with everything moving this fast, here's my answer: Becoming a developer after 40 when AI already codes.
Why Pandarine shows which scale it follows
That's exactly why Pandarine clearly states which HSK scale it follows: you always know which words you're reviewing, and for which level. To be upfront: the app is built for people who learn in French.
The method behind it works in any language, old HSK or new: spaced repetition. I explain why the first two months are the hardest (and why it gets lighter afterwards) in Learning after 45: the first two months are the hardest.
Frequently asked questions
Is my old HSK certificate still valid?
Yes, old certificates remain valid. However, each employer, school or authority decides what it accepts and how it reads them. The safest move: add the year and the scale on your résumé.
What does my old HSK 2 correspond to in the new HSK?
There's no official table. Comparing vocabulary, the old HSK 2 (300 words) roughly matches the new HSK 1, the old HSK 3 the new HSK 2, the old HSK 4 the new HSK 3, and the old HSK 6 the new HSK 5.
How many levels does the new HSK have?
Nine, grouped into three bands: elementary (1 to 3), intermediate (4 to 6) and advanced (7 to 9). Total vocabulary goes from about 5,000 to 11,000 words, and the speaking test becomes mandatory from level 3.
Do I need to retake the HSK under the new scale?
Not necessarily. If an employer or school asks for a specific level, first check which version they mean. Otherwise, showing what you can actually do beats retaking an exam just to get a new label.
